Would you believe me if I told you:
1. UK airspace is shut down due to a cloud of Icelandic volcanic ash?
2. The UK’s Transport Minister is named Lord Adonis?
3. The UK held its first ever televised Prime Ministerial debates tonite?
4. A Welsh political party running in the upcoming general election is called Plaid?
What a queer little country I live in…

April 19, 2010 at 3:04 pmAh, but in Welsh "plaid" means a group or faction or party – as in "Plaid Cymru"= "Party of Wales".
What you're used to comes from Scottish Gaelic, where it means a blanket. Or an ambush (make of that what you will).

May 16, 2010 at 10:03 amThank you for that helpful explanation. I still think it would be more fun if there was a Plaid plaid, although I suppose what plaid they chose for their branding could be quite a conundrum given clan politics. Being married to Glen, I'd vote for a Macintosh.
